Richard’s Story

Author: hevs
08 13th, 2011

For the last two years I have gone to lead the Life Art team in the Insight Outreach tent at the Belladrum Music Festival. This is the story of how God took one of those 350 encounters to become a life completely transformed, visit and a tattoo as well!

We were starting to close our tent down at the end of the festival in 2010 when Charity Bowman Webb, the Insight outreach leader came and asked me would I do one more encounter. I was tired but I knew God had the resource and now I am so glad I didn’t say no! I felt that God had gifted this man Richard with love and strength and that He would show Him how to combine the two and express himself in new and powerful ways.

My name is Richard and I live in Inverness, Scotland.

I was brought up on a poor working class housing estate in Inverness, not much money in the house and my dad was an alcoholic and my mum did the best she could for us, the five of us, three brothers my sis and me.While growing up I always said I would never end up like my dad, that turned out to be a joke, I ended up every bit as bad if not worse, (I love my dad by the way).

I started drinking and drugging at 15 years old and for the next 31 years, I left a trail of devastation and destruction behind me, I could not form a lasting loving relationship with anyone, I ended up with 4 children and wasn’t a full time dad to any of them.
My life was a mess and I was trying to drink myself to death, I was lost, lonely and desperate for some good in my life, I didn’t know where to find these things, I now know I was looking in the wrong places.

On the 14th of Feb 2010, I had a drunken fight with one of my sons, I had also sent a nasty text to the girl that I was seeing, I knew nothing of that until the next day, while fighting with my son, I went to punch him but something stopped me,( I believe it was the Grace of God coming into my life), and I didn’t do it. I remember my son leaving the house broken hearted, it broke my heart.

When I woke up in the morning, my then girlfriend had texted me, asking why I had been so nasty with my text, I was shattered when I read it, Valentines Day and I was just a nasty drunk with no respect for anyone or anything, I was at my lowest point ever, none of my children  wanted to know me and I had lost the woman I professed to love. I seriously considered suicide.

Well God’s Grace was at work so somehow I ended up at Alcoholics Anonymous. For six weeks I managed to fight the cravings I was having for alcohol. Then I came across a verse in the big book of AA saying ask God to take away the compulsion to drink alcohol. Now I really wanted to stop drinking, so I got down on my hands and knees and with all my heart I asked God to take away my cravings and compulsions for alcohol.
I’ve never had a drink since that moment nor craved a drink. a miracle right there, that’s when my relationship with God begun.

I tried a few churches and it was when I went into the barn church in Culloden that I felt God say “This is where I want you, Richard”

I started to build a relationship with God, seeking Him more and more and in August 2010 my journey took me to Belladrum Tartan Heart music festival, where I had the most exciting experience with God through a Life Art drawing I had done by one of the spiritual artists on the team.
Her name was Heather Thorp and she was softly spoken and gentle, she explained to me what she was going to do, then she asked if she could lay her hand on me, I agreed.
Then she started to draw, she finished the drawing and as soon as she gave it to me something powerful stirred in me, she had drawn a heart with a hammer inside with a message saying” no compromise”, Heather said to me,”this is what God has given to me for you,”and it blew me away.
I didn’t know what it meant at the time but I truly knew in my heart it was from God. Wow wow wow. All glory to God.

During this time I had stopped drinking, I was closer to God but my life was still a mess, I still felt lonely, my relationships were not getting any better, there was still something missing in my life.
Then I did the Alpha course and started to learn about Jesus, who He was and who He is.
I work in construction and it was on a building site that I had a personal meeting with Jesus.
My head was in a mess, my life was a mess and I thought I was going to burst and I did, I raised my arms in the air and looked upwards to Heaven and cried out Jesus, Jesus, what am I doing wrong, I can’t do this on my own anymore, forgive me for my sins, I give my life to you, come and be my Lord and Saviour, and He came and gave me peace to get through the rest of the day.
I woke up next morning and put my feet on the carpet, looked in the mirror and thought to myself, there’s something different about today, then I realised I had slept all night for the first time in 31 years and I knew Jesus was in my heart.
My life changed forever that day, my journey since then has been amazing, my relationship with my children is growing all the time, my relationship with my mum and dad is the best its ever been, though I don’t have a wife yet, I’m no longer alone. I also have two wonderful granddaughters whom I love dearly.
I can see now when I look back that God was preparing me to meet our Lord Jesus.

Now back to the heart and hammer, I now know why I was so stirred.

God was speaking to me.

“I am so full of love and I am so strong that My love for you will never be compromised, I will always love you, I give to your heart My love and My strength, to carry on your journey, to freely give what you have freely been given.”

When I finally understood what God was saying to me it had a profound effect an me and I had the hammer and heart tattooed on to my left forearm, what a blessing that has turned out to be, a ministry all on its own, I’ve lost count of the people who have asked me about it, the perfect God given opportunity to talk about God, Jesus and the time I had at the outreach tent at Belladrum.

I will finish with what I think is an amazing story.

I went to Clan Gathering of the churches in St Andrews, Fife, Scotland, for the very first time, I went in to one of the tents and there was a row of the most beautiful paintings, done by spiritual artists, I was immediately drawn to one, it was called the Heart of Creation and it just spoke to me, God was telling me that my new heart was His creation and that He was pleased with me, how great is our God.

I had to wait four days to meet the artist, the artist turned out to be Heather Thorp, we were so excited we were jumping up and down like little children, God had used Heather to give me another message, it was one of the best moments in my life and I will never forget it, our God is amazing.

This is the short version of my life.  SO FAR, God has a plan for ME and YOU. HA HA

All Glory to God!

Richard now owns a Heart of Creation painting and wanted to come and be part of the outreach team at Belladrum Music Festival this year. He served so fantastically as receptionist at our outreach tent this year, he experienced God’s perspective for all the people coming through and even encouraged his daughter to come in, and I had the privilege of doing a Life Art piece for her too. I know this story isn’t over… wait and see what happens next!

Atrium Art Update

It was my privilege to teach a shared seminar with Charity Bowman Webb at the brand new Clan Women conference in April. You can listen to the recording for free at http://www.clangathering.org.uk/page/3233/CLAN+Resources . The seminar is called ‘Throw Some Flames’ and for about the first 45 minutes Charity is teaching some great foundations for outreach and then I talk about creativity in church and the Biblical foundations for Source.

I hope you enjoy it… be blessed!

I am heading off on Saturday to pioneer something else new for the main Clan Gathering conference – in the new Atrium tent I have organised a team of platform artists. This is the first time that there will be two or three artists painting every night!

Having art in worship is an amazing thing – the Spirit just starts speaking to people outwith the confines of words, women’s health
and really seems to get to the heart in a special way. Now I adore words, sick
literature was my degree course for four years but there is something so dynamic about colour and movement that I have fallen in love with, and it is a great way to do outreach too.  It completely thrills me how people come up and share the very different but real ways in which God is impacting them through the art, and next post I will share one very special story with you…

I was so privileged to be working with artists from Scotland and the USA – Aline Lidwell, who was part of my church but now at Bethel, and Anna Elkins who I met at the Bethel School of Kingdom Creativity. She is an amazing poet too, her blog is at http://wordbody.blogspot.com/ .

I felt to paint two scriptures, Genesis 1 v1-3 above and Matthew 9 v 36 – 28 below.

Also painting were Linette Penney Gainham, Beth Sciallo and Josie Fish, amazing women that I have learned so much from. Linette runs all kinds of exciting workshops and sells her amazing paintings through http://www.penneylanestudios.com/ .

Spiritual Exercises

Author: hevs

Ben and I recently started a Source housegroup with a focus of those involved in, abortion and coming through spiritual seeker events, viagra 40mg and we are using spiritual exercises to help us grow in understanding the spiritual life. Journalling is one of those types of exercise, ailment and there are some simple questions we can ask Jesus and I wanted to share them:

What should I do less of?

What should I do more of?

Is there something new I should try?

If you haven’t tried journalling, I highly recommend it, and the course by Mark Virkler ‘Four Keys to Hearing God’s Voice’ is available through http://www.cwgministries.org/index.htm.

I combine doodling and drawing with my writing, and play around with genres, adding poetry and collage and any kind of creativity that will release more understanding to me. As I delve deeper into the Visual and Kinesthetic styles of learning, these methods become a meditation on the truth and revelation of God’s Bible and also the intimacy I have with him.

Recording your journey is also an act of faith and an act of testimony – it helps us overcome, triumph, live in victory. It’s fun! This is also why it is an important part of the LSJ course.

I will add pictures in the future but at the moment I can’t work out how to get photos onto this computer – its new!

For the other spiritual exercises, see posts further on.

Happy Thursday xx

Hope to see you there!

If you are interested in a training event in your church or area, I am happy to travel.

Another training event will be run in June.

A while back I posted the ‘Gifts’ spiritual exercise, there and here are two more I have written. As you do these, men’s health turn off your editor until the end and simply write each step as an act of faith, the first positive things that come into your head are likely the answer to this declarative prayer. Say it out loud  and place your hand on your head or your heart:

I bless all my senses to receive revelation from the Spirit of Jesus. No other voice is permitted to speak. I bless my sanctified imagination to receive words, pictures, sounds, smells, tastes, fragments, thoughts and ideas. I open the eyes and ears of my heart, mind and will to receive the wonderful variety of communication from the Spirit of Jesus.

Spiritual Exercise – Seed

The Bible has many uses of the seed metaphor, including the parables of Matthew 13.

1. Ask the Spirit of Jesus to show you a seed he is giving to you – there may be more than one. Describe how it looks, feels and even smells. You may like to put out your hand as a sign you are receiving it.

2. What colouration does the seed have? What is the size, shape and condition?

3. Ask where the seed is to be planted, and visualise it happening in the spirit.

4. Ask if there is a scripture verse that is attached to this seed.

5. Ask what plant will grow from this seed, including any flowers.

6. Ask what fruit or result will come from this.

7. Ask how you can fully co-operate with heaven in growing this seed (are there any weeds or birds or soil issues to deal with?).

This is part of the course, ‘Listening to the Spirit of Jesus’ that I have developed, and am hoping to get it published this year! If you want to use these exercises, please email me at heather@sourcelife.net.

The second exercise is a more advanced one. I have chosen to release it in order that we may all co-operate more fully with the Father in bringing heaven to earth, that we may partner with ‘Your will be done, Your Kingdom come’. As with all journalling, it is wise to submit it to a mature mentor  who can grow you in your gifting.

Journey to Heaven

Rev 4 v 1-2 After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open in heaven. And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.” At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it.

The first three chapters of Ezekiel are also worth studying before this exercise.

Step 1: Ask the Holy Spirit to show you how you will travel to heaven, eg by vehicle, heavenly being, flying… Write down what you see, colours, textures and features … and go!

Step 2: Describe your journey – what do you see, hear, feel, sense as you travel? Record your impressions.

Step 3: Ask the Holy Spirit to take you to a particular room or space in heaven, eg throne room. Describe what you see, including colours, creatures, furniture etc.

Step 4:  Ask the Holy Spirit to let you hear the sounds and smells of heaven. Record what you hear, including any words.

Step 5: Approach the Lord. Describe what you see.

Step 6: Ask the Lord if he has a message or gift for you and record it.

Step 7: Ask how you can co-operate with what heaven is doing on earth today. Ask for the love, power and wisdom to work with Him in all things today.

So you brought a friend to Light and Life, pharm or ministered at the psychic fair, cheap or gave a word to your colleague… you know that what is out there already won’t necessarily fit with their particular tribe or culture, decease
but want them to have a place where they can build relationship, ask questions, be free from jargon, encounter Jesus experientially and get more prophecy, healing and truth.

These are the questions that many have been asking, given the recent surge in evangelistic events to the spiritual seekers in Scotland. Since Light and Life started, over 400 people have come to faith and GPC have also seen significant numbers.

What is next for them when inviting them to church doesn’t fit with where they are? Here is an option currently in its second pilot in Glasgow:

Source is running a seven week course called ‘Listening to the Spirit of Jesus’. This course covers the following topics:

  • A variety of methods for connecting to the Spirit of Jesus including types of meditation and spiritual exercises
  • How to receive wisdom, guidance, healing and miracles from the Spirit of Jesus
  • Growing love, joy and peace in your world
  • Understanding of the spiritual realm and how to access it
  • Spiritual tools for vision and dream interpretation

Website: http://sourcelife.net

Course Outline

Week 1 – Intro to Jesus – getting rid of misconceptions

Week 2 – Jesus as Creator – we have a soul and a spirit, angelic/demonic

Week 3 – Jesus, Physical Healing and Miracles – healing activation

Week 4 – Jesus and Inner Healing – breaking lies, healing wounds

Week 5 – Jesus as Rescuer – what salvation means

Week 6 – Jesus as Guide – what Jesus as Lord means

Week 7 – Jesus and Your Future Journey – how to keep your faith and grow

Meeting Outline

7.30 to 7.50 Welcome slot – drinks, food, icebreaker.

7.50 to 8.10 Teaching slot – short, creative and non-religious.

8.10 to 8.30 Practical activation – exercises, meditation, journaling.

8.30 to 9.00 Group time – check up on their revelation, their week, answer questions, pray and prophesy over them. Ask for healing, miracles, transformation…

Run over seven week blocks, the course can be run by any team of individuals in Scotland or beyond, and could lead to a housegroup exploring new patterns of church. It could also lead to Alpha – it is intended to stir up hunger for more, as they taste and see that God is good! It would work as a one-to-one discipleship tool or for a much bigger group, provided you had enough leaders.

‘Listening to the Spirit of Jesus’ is both a harvesting tool and a gathering in tool – both bait and net, and allows the cleansing and equipping process to begin.

The course is designed for:

  • those who have recently invited Jesus into their lives.
  • those who have not yet taken that step but who have a hunger to find out more.
  • those who are recommitting after having fallen away and have no church currently.

I feel strongly that this course is not for the harvest already gathered in, therefore the course is not suitable for:

  • those who have been Christians more than two years – it is ‘baby basic’.
  • those under other pastoral authority – people from other churches who want to connect to Jesus more should be directed to other resources.

Summer 2010:  a vision.

It was like watching a movie, tooth like Lord of the Rings, thumb and the first bit was slowed down. Out of the darkness came a rider in silver armour on a white horse coming in flying leaps toward me, website like this I was overwhelmed by a sense of power that went in a wave right through my core, and realised it was Jesus, he was dressed in silver armour and had a huge sword with a giant ruby set in the pommel. His helmet was above his glowing white hair and it had the words victor and triumphant inscribed on it, with intricate designs etched all over the metal. I saw his sword also had many words of truth etched on it, and he took his sword to a field of ripe wheat and began to harvest it all, bending from the horse as it galloped down the side of the hill. I asked if there was more to see and I looked up at the moon which began to wax from a quarter full to completely full.

In context, this came at the end of a meeting I had to discuss church planting among the spiritual seeker community. The moon is a symbol of the church as a body that reflects the light of the Son, and the desire of my heart is to partner with heaven to see His bride come to shining fullness…

I had asked for a name for this ministry, and felt it on the tip of my tongue and spirit as I tried to search it out, for a while I was going ‘oh… o… I know it has an ‘o’ in it!’ But Jesus is the source of life and everything was created by and through Him, He is the centre (John 1). And so it fitted perfectly.

So I will be using this blog to post my progress in this journey.

What is Source?

The aims of Source as a missional discipleship ministry are:

  • to fill an existing gap in what is currently available for spiritual seekers to connect to the Trinity
  • to help remove barriers between seekers and this connection though experiential encounters and practical teaching
  • to provide another set of options for Christians trying to follow up those who come to faith or come near to faith
  • to redeem the spiritual and creative forms of worship that are less readily available today
  • to bring in the spiritual seeker Bride
  • to use language that is easily accessible and explain jargon clearly
  • to release a fresh expression of church in church planting

‘Listening to the Spirit of Jesus’ is a course produced by the Source ministry which is planned to help achieve these aims.

More on the LSJ course in future posts!
